Are Second Hand Parts Worth Buying? Why Not Just Buy New?
When considering replacing a part on your car, you usually have the choice to make between getting a brand new part, or buying a used second hand part. Both have their positives and negatives, which we will go over in this blog post.
Buying new parts has the advantage of getting a part you know is brand new, and has a very high chance of being defect free and working for a considerable amount of time in the future, making it reliable. This is one of the most beneficial aspects to buying new parts, especially if you also have to pay for labour to get it installed. The last thing you want is to have the part fail, having then to pay labour again (or spend your own time doing it twice!) to replace the part.
However, new parts come with a cost (quite literally). New parts often cost considerably more than used or second hand parts. Sometimes they can be up to 5 times or more the cost of a used part. So in many cases even if you had to replace the part again, it wouldn't pay off. This is where it really depends on what the part is.
One other factor to consider is it may be difficult or not even possible to get hold of brand new parts. Depending on the age of the car, manufacturers tend to stop making replacement parts for older cars, so finding new parts can get tricky, especially if it's a model that is not so popular or common.
Used parts are great because they are cheap, plentiful, and relatively easy to get a hold of. There are many places you can get quality used car parts, such as from us at AA Wreckers, which will do the job just as well as a new part. Genuine parts tend to be manufactured to very high standards, and will often last decades, meaning a second hand part will often get the job done for you for the foreseeable future, at a significantly lower cost than a new part.
The only downside to used parts is that you can't guarantee how long they will last, but this is usually only a problem with technical bits such as electronics. With most other parts like panels, even motors and gearboxes, a basic inspection will reveal what condition the part is in, which will tell you how long you can expect it to last.
We at AA Wreckers only sell European car parts that we believe are in good, working condition so that you know you are getting a working part that will last and do the job for you.
